6 MEL

CALIFORNIA. Land of oceans, palm trees, and cool breezes, but I was here on business, so the first thing I did after landing was get a gun.

I couldn’t be in LA by myself and walk around naked while going to see the connect I had only met one time before. Gary always insisted that he dealt with the connect on his own and now I felt stupid for allowing him to shut me out.

“He’s a particular kind of dude. It's easier if I go see him on my own.” Gary always told me and now I thought that maybe I should have pushed him to let me come. We called the connect Juan. That's all I knew and I tried to remember his face as I paced the hotel room. I fought to remember what he looked like and guess his demeanor. This particular dude that Gary spoke about was now going to be the biggest issue standing between me and my money and if he wasn’t happy or didn’t like me then I would be without a supplier and the business would be finished. I couldn’t let that happen.

I paced the floor of the suite, going over everything I was told over the phone. The instructions were clear. Get to LA, get a car, and go to the Clayton Marx Hotel where a room would already be waiting for me under the name Umar Ruiz. Go there, wait for further instructions, and that was exactly what I did.

With the California sun fading in the sky, I sat down and read over Gary’s letter for the millionth time.

Cotton,

“If you're reading this, shit must have gone bad. I need you to straighten up and do what Warriors do.”

I read over the letter a dozen times on the plane, fighting back tears. I was ready to break off from Gary, leave the kingdom if I had to, but I never wanted it to be like this.

I had no idea what the connects number was, all of that information died with Gary, but I already knew who had everything. I just had to wait here for her to give it to me. I already knew to be patient, Gia held all the cards. He had told me that years ago. And finally when she gave me the envelope, I felt like a kid on Christmas.

I kept reading his letter, making sure I got everything clear and straight.

“Now I just have two requests from you. Keep my kingdom going and take care of my wife.” I read the words like Gary was sitting right next to me.

“Follow everything I taught you and know that shit might be bleak for a while without me around, but don’t trust a motherfucking soul. Remember everything I taught you.”

I tried to remember every lesson, every talk, and all the instructions that Gary gave me. All the things he told . I never knew that one day I would be begging for that time back, but in a way, I was glad.
